Breathing is something we do without thinking, yet how we breathe impacts every part of our lives. For John*, a man in his 50s, his breathing had become inconsistent and less smooth, particularly at work and during sleep. While his fitness routine of 4-5 hours of exercise a week seemed unaffected, he knew something wasn’t right and reached out for help.

At Beam Therapy, we guided John through a breath training programme designed to assess and correct dysfunctional breathing patterns. By the end of the programme, John felt his breathing was better than it had ever been. Here’s his story.

The Assessment

Our initial focus was on understanding John’s current breath function. One of the key tools we use is the Body Oxygen Level Test (BOLT), which provides insight into how efficiently the body utilises oxygen.

note: You will need a stopwatch or timer

Want to try it yourself? Here’s how:

  1. Sit comfortably and breathe normally for a few minutes.

  2. Take a normal breath in and out through your nose, then pinch your nose to hold your breath.

  3. Count the seconds until you feel the first urge to breathe (e.g., the need to swallow or exhale).

  4. Release your nose and resume normal breathing.

  5. A score below 25 seconds suggests the possibility of having dysfunctional breathing habits.

  6. A score of 40+ seconds is considered ideal for good breath function.

When we tested John, his starting BOLT score was 25 seconds, and we identified patterns of dysfunctional breathing, particularly breath-holding during tasks like writing emails and shallow breathing during sleep.

The Transformation

Using a combination of Oxygen Advantage techniques, we worked to retrain John’s breathing. These included:

  • LSD Breathing (Light, Slow, Deep): This foundational technique helps calm the nervous system and improve oxygen delivery.

  • Box Breathing: A simple yet powerful method to regulate the breath and increase focus, using timed inhalations, holds, and exhalations.

  • Mouth Taping: Encouraging nasal breathing during sleep to improve oxygen efficiency and promote better rest.

Through consistent practice and small adjustments, John made remarkable progress. His BOLT score improved to 44 seconds, and he noticed significant changes in his day-to-day life:

  • He stopped unconsciously holding his breath at work, improving his focus and reducing stress.

  • His sleep quality improved dramatically, leaving him more energised and rested.

  • He felt in control of his breath and experienced newfound ease in his breathing patterns.

What John Said

By the end of his journey, John described his breathing as “better than it’s ever been.” Through regular practice and personalised guidance, he was able to unlock the full potential of his breath.
