From Burnout to Balance: Jane's Story

In the summer of 2024, I received a message from someone—let’s call her Jane. Her words were simple but heavy: “I need help.”

Jane is someone who could easily be described as a high achiever. She held a position of great authority, managed a large team, and was the go-to person for her friends, family, and even her wider community. She thrived on helping others, but over the years, that came at a cost.

When we finally managed to have a consultation call, after a couple of cancellations, it was clear Jane was burned out. Despite her professional success, she couldn’t stop crying during our 30-minute conversation. She shared that she was exhausted—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and was terrified she was heading toward a health crisis. She even confided that she feared she might have a heart attack if something didn’t change.

When Success Becomes a Burden

Jane loved being the dependable one, the person everyone leaned on. But little by little, this role had eroded her sense of self. In prioritising everyone else’s needs, she had completely lost sight of her own.

She admitted to me that she had never taken sick leave before, believing she simply couldn’t afford to. But in that moment of vulnerability, she realised she needed to take a step back.

The Journey of Healing

We began working together with in-person therapy sessions where we unpacked the overwhelming challenges she was facing. For the first time in decades, Jane decided to take sick leave, giving herself the space to focus on her own well-being.

Using Havening, we processed past traumas that had shaped her need to constantly help others, including childhood issues that had reinforced this pattern. Over the next few months, we worked on everything from rebuilding her confidence to repairing relationships that had become imbalanced.

One of the most remarkable things about Jane was her commitment to the process. She embraced therapy wholeheartedly, completing every exercise and applying every piece of homework with the same determination she brought to her career.

A New Beginning

After six therapy sessions over four months, Jane walked into our final session as a transformed person. She told me, with tears in her eyes, “I’m now the person I was always meant to be.”

She shared how her relationships were now more balanced and nourishing, and for the first time in years, she felt excited about life. As she hugged me goodbye, she said something I will never forget:

“I don’t know where I would be if I hadn’t come to you, but I think it may have been in a grave.”

The Hidden Burden of Strength

Over the years, I’ve met so many people like Jane—strong, dependable individuals who carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. They are often described as “the strong ones,” the people everyone turns to in times of crisis. But strength, when unsupported, can become a heavy burden.

If you resonate with Jane’s story, please know you don’t have to carry everything alone. Reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness—it’s an act of courage.
