THERAPIST NOTES: The One About Grief

Some things change us forever.

Loss, in all its forms, doesn’t just leave a space. It reshapes us. It shifts how we see the world, how we move through it, and who we are in it.

And yet, we often expect ourselves to "get over it." To tidy it up. To put it in a box and get on with things.

But that’s not how grief works.

I’ve supported so many people through grief in the therapy room. And I’ve walked through it myself many times. Some of the losses I’ve shared openly, like losing my dad. Others I’ve held quietly.

And here’s what I know for sure:

  • Grief doesn’t have a deadline.

  • It doesn’t move in a straight line.

  • And it doesn’t mean you’re broken.

  • It just means you loved.

This is a note I wrote to myself. And maybe it’s for you too.

If you’ve had a wave of sadness hit you recently, seemingly out of nowhere, at the “wrong” time, without explanation, please know, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re not stuck. You haven’t failed. You’re just human.

And even if the rest of the world has moved on…It’s okay that your heart hasn’t fully caught up.

You are still healing. And you are still whole.

With love, Lianne x
